RE Curriculum
Religious Education at St. Paul’s
At St. Paul’s, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum lies at the heart of our school and is deeply rooted in our mission and values. We are committed to nurturing children’s faith, spirituality and understanding of the world around them. In line with diocesan guidance, a minimum of 10% of curriculum time across all key stages is dedicated to RE, ensuring it remains a central and valued part of school life.
Our RE Curriculum Journey
We are currently in an exciting period of transition as all year groups have now moved towards a new diocesan-approved programme: The Vine and the Branches. This innovative scheme, developed by the Teachers’ Enterprise in Religious Education, supports schools in delivering the requirements of the Religious Education Directory (2025).
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In EYFS, our RE provision is guided by the RE Curriculum Directory, supported by the programme The Way, the Truth and the Life. Alongside this, children are gently introduced to the “Ways of Knowing” from the new Directory. This provides a strong foundation for curiosity, reflection and early faith development, while ensuring continuity as they move through the school.
Key Stages 1 and 2
From Years 1 to 6, pupils are now following The Vine and the Branches programme. This engaging and thoughtfully structured resource uses pupil-friendly language and clearly supports teachers in delivering both the Knowledge Lenses and the Ways of Knowing required by the new Directory.
The programme is organised into six key “branches”, each exploring different aspects of the Catholic faith and story:
Creation and Covenant
Prophecy and Promise
Galilee to Jerusalem
Desert to Garden
To the Ends of the Earth
Dialogue and Encounter
Each branch is made up of a series of carefully sequenced units, all rooted in Scripture. At the heart of every lesson is an opportunity for pupils to listen to, reflect on and grow in familiarity with the Word of God.
A Rich and Reflective Learning Experience
RE lessons at St. Paul’s are designed to inspire and engage. Children are encouraged to explore “discernment questions”, helping them to think deeply about faith, values and their own beliefs. Alongside this, pupils enjoy a wide range of creative activities—including art, drama, discussion and reflection—which allow them to express their understanding in meaningful ways.
Through our RE curriculum, we aim to develop knowledgeable, thoughtful and compassionate individuals who are equipped to live out Gospel values in their everyday lives.
