Girl's Football Team Narrowly Miss Out

On Friday evening the Girl’s Football team travelled to Curzon Ashton FC to take part in the Tameside football heats. There were a number of excellent football teams in the competition and St. Paul’s were one of them. After a very close and well defended first game with Manor Green, St. Paul’s lost but they were able to take huge positives into their next game against St. John Fisher.

St. Pauls came out strong and took an early lead thanks to a great finish (and wonderful celebration) from Katie (Year 6). Again, St. Paul’s defended brilliantly and SJF could not break the defensive partnership that the three Izzy’s (Year 6) had created! Then Katie popped up with a second goal to complete her brace and secure the win.

The next game was against a very good (and the eventual heat winners) Greenside team. Even with St. Paul’s defending magnificently, we could not keep them from scoring and lost 2-0.

Which left our last game; knowing that if we won we would have a good chance of qualifying for the finals. St. Paul’s again came out strong and the midfield of Millie, Libby, Nisaa and Emma (Year 6) were doing all they could to find a break-through but we were starting to think that it wasn’t our day. Then in the dying moments a miscommunication with the referee led to a goal for Dowson and a defeat for us.

The team finished in a very respectable third place against some very good footballing teams. They played with a sporting attitude and a smile throughout the whole competition.

Well done girls!
