Year 5T 2019 - 2020

Mr Titterington

Welcome to Year 5T!

Dear Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break . Please find below an overview of our curriculum for the Spring term, and some brief information about Year 5. Hopefully, this information will answer most of the questions which you may have at the beginning of this year.

This year Mrs Ingham will be our Year 5 teaching assistant.

During the spring term, both Year 5 classes will be given a homework menu. This menu will include a selection of 6 English and 6 Maths homework activities. Each week the children will be able to select their own homework to complete for that week. The order in which tasks are completed is the choice of the children. All 6 activities must be completed by the half term break in February. Homework books will need to be brought into school on a Tuesday (so that they can be marked) and will be returned to the children on a Thursday for the next homework to be completed. Some homework, such as using Times Table Rockstars will require not evidence in the children's books, for some activities the children may choose to write or show their calculations or ideas in their homework book.

The children will continue with their guided reading sessions daily in school. Additionally, each child will have an independent reading book which should be read regularly at home. Due to the importance of reading at this stage of the children’s development, I would like to highlight the significance of providing opportunities for reading at home. I encourage parents to listen to their children read aloud at home, and to write comments about their child’s reading in their reading records. Reading books will be changed when a parent/guardian have checked that their child has finished their book. Mrs Ingham will monitor the children’s reading books and the dates when they are changed, to ensure that consistent progress is being made in the children’s development.

Spellings and Times Tables

Beginning in the second week of this term, we will be focussing on a different spelling pattern each week. The children will receive a copy of their spellings each Monday to take home to practice. It is important that the children learn the spelling rule using the support of the spelling list. These spellings will be tested on a Friday.

Times table rockstars will still be available for the children to use during Year 5, with an aim to win the battle of bands each time they are set! We will continue to work on our times tables throughout Year 5.

During this term, the children will have two P.E. sessions throughout the week. They have been asked to bring their P.E. kits in on a Monday, and take them home on a Friday. For the Autumn half term, Year 5T’s P.E. days will be Wednesday and Thursday. Later this term the children will have swimming lessons.
